Considering Long-Acting Reversible Contraception

Considering Long-Acting Reversible Contraception

Using an effective form of birth control is the best way to reduce the risk of an unplanned pregnancy. However, many forms of birth control must be used correctly and consistently to work. For example, if a women decides to take birth control pills she must take them every day or risk an unplanned pregnancy. Deciding which type of birth control is right for you depends on many factors including your age, current level of health, sexual activity and number of sexual partners. OC Women’s Care is happy to offer a range of contraceptive methods as well as help you determine which method is right for you.

Intrauterine devices (IUD) are growing in popularity because they solve many of the problems associated with other forms of birth control, like the pill. IUDs are small and “T-shaped.” In the United States, two main types of IUDs are available:

  • Copper (ParaGard)
  • Hormonal (Mirena or Skyla)

Both the copper and hormonal IUD work by affecting the way the sperm moves, stopping it from joining with an egg. To successfully use this form of birth control, a health care provider must insert it the uterus. IUDs are considered one of the most effective forms of birth control. Statistics show that less than 1 out of 100 women will get pregnant each year when using an IUD.

Does OC Women’s Care offer IUDs?

At OC Women’s Care, we are able to offer IUDs as a form of contraception. OC Women’s Care offers:

  • Copper Intrauterine Device or ParaGard IUD – This small, T-shaped device is place inside the uterus and does not use any hormones. If desired, this type of IUD can remain in the uterus for up to 10 years
  • Levonorgestrel Intrauterine Device or Mirena IUD – This small, T-shaped device contains Levonorgestrel. When placed inside the uterus, it releases a small amount of progestin on daily basis. Progestin thickens a woman’s cervical mucus which blocks sperm from joining with an egg. This type of IUD can be kept in place for up to 5 years
  • Levonorgestrel Intrauterine Device or Skyla IUD – This IUD is designed to work for up to 3 years only

IUDs offer many benefits including being one of the least expensive and longest lasting forms of birth control available today. If you are interested in an IUD, make an appointment to speak with Dr. Sedaghat today.
